The coastal sister to Ambassador Hotel Hargeisa brings 58 rooms, 56 villas and a 300-guest ballroom to Berbera, a city whose port and economic zone are drawing a steady stream of business visitors.

Berbera has a container terminal built for some of the largest ships afloat and an economic zone modelled on Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone. What it has had far less of is somewhere for the people doing that business to stay. Ambassador Hotel Berbera, which held its soft opening on 10 October 2026, is betting that gap is real.

The hotel sits on Berbera Airport Road, about five minutes from the airport and roughly an hour and a half’s drive from Hargeisa. It is the coastal counterpart to Ambassador Hotel Hargeisa, which opened in 2002 and has spent more than two decades hosting diplomats, international organisations and business travellers in the capital. Berbera is the group’s first property outside Hargeisa.

The Opening

The ceremony brought investors, officials and traditional leaders into the hotel’s ballroom. Berbera’s mayor and the governor of Sahil region attended, alongside a representative of Dahabshiil, regional security leaders, former public officials and members of the local business community. Speakers included Mohammed Alabrei and Khadar Aden Hussein, who spoke about the investment in the hotel and in Berbera, and Supachai Wattanaveerachai, chief executive of DP World Somaliland. Gulaid Haarun hosted the English-language proceedings.

DP World’s presence at a hotel launch says something. The company runs the port that underpins most of the city’s commercial activity, and its leadership turning out for a hospitality opening is a reminder that the two are connected: shipping lines, logistics firms and investors all need somewhere to stay when they visit.

What’s On Offer

The hotel has 58 rooms. There are 54 Deluxe Rooms, each with sea, pool or garden views and a double bed that can be split into twins. There are also four larger en-suite rooms with a separate living area and a balcony, aimed at families and longer stays. Breakfast is included.

Alongside them are 56 one-bedroom villas, each with its own kitchen, living area and private parking. That is an unusual mix for Berbera, and the villas point most clearly to the market the hotel has in mind. NGO teams, contractors and business visitors who stay for weeks rather than nights are poorly served by a standard hotel room, and long-term residency is available on request.

The ballroom seats up to 300 and divides into smaller spaces, with separate ladies’ and family areas and in-house catering. That gives the city a venue for conferences, government events and weddings. There is also a restaurant serving international halal food from 6am to 8pm, a coffee bar, an outdoor pool, a gym, gardens and an on-site mosque. The beach is about 15 minutes’ drive away, and a shuttle service is planned.

Two practical details stand out for business guests. The hotel runs on solar power around the clock, which is still rare in Berbera, and it says it operates security to UN standards within a guarded compound.

The Berbera Backdrop

We have followed Berbera’s development closely on this site, and hospitality has been the missing piece. DP World’s new container terminal opened in June 2021, lifting capacity from 150,000 to 500,000 TEU a year. The first phase of the Berbera Economic Zone followed in March 2023, 15km from the port on the corridor towards Ethiopia. A direct DP World shipping service now links Berbera with Jebel Ali every nine days. (More in our DP World Berbera Watch List.)

Each of those projects brings visitors: shipping and logistics staff, investors scouting the economic zone, consultants and government delegations. Until now, many of them have stayed in Hargeisa and made the drive, or settled for a limited choice of rooms in Berbera itself.

The hotel is targeting that traffic, along with NGO staff, diplomats and members of the diaspora. It is also going after a second market closer to home: Hargeisa residents who want a weekend by the sea. It is a different bet from the one the Serene Sarovar made in the capital, built around long stays and the coast rather than an international five-star brand.

Our View

Berbera’s commercial story has mostly been told through cranes, quays and trade corridors. Hotels are a quieter signal, but often a telling one: investors build rooms when they expect people to keep arriving.

The real test for Ambassador Berbera will be year-round occupancy. Port-linked business travel is steady but limited, so the 56 villas in particular will need long-stay organisations, the Hargeisa weekend crowd and diaspora families to come good. Two decades of trading in Hargeisa give the group a head start that a new operator would not have. If the demand materialises, Berbera starts to look less like a place people pass through and more like one where they stay.
